NUMBER 29
(Kriston’s Song) ~ Words and Music by
Ran Birkins
Tell me have you ever seen greener,
thicker grass?
Or more meticulously manicured crushed
brick basepaths?
Mower tracks form
checkerboards flanked by freshly chalked foul lines;
blue padded fences frame the field
beneath a cloudless summer sky.
And on this field you're sure to see
truly amazing plays
turned in in nearly every inning of
every game;
power pitching, splendid hitting,
brilliant defense, blinding speed,
screaming line drives, diving catches,
head-first sliding double steals.
Welcome to Heaven Field, home of the
baseball Saints;
eternal all-stars, every one a member of
God's Hall of Fame.
This'll be your locker over here; in it
everything you need you'll find,
cleats and gloves and hats and bats and
your uniform, pinstriped, Number 29.
In the stands each fan's a student of
the game,
well-schooled in sacrifices and squeeze
bunts, hit-and-run plays.
Out on the field no arguments, the umps
have never missed a call;
this is the way the game was meant to be
played; Heaven's brand of ball!
(repeat chorus)
Hurry, Rook, get ready for the P.A.
announcer's line:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, your
attention:
Now batting for your Saints, the Rook,
Kriston, Number 29!"
Welcome to Heaven Field, home of the
baseball Saints;
eternal all-stars, every one a member of
God's Hall of Fame.
We're so happy now to have you here,
though hurting for your loved ones left
behind;
if they could only see you now they'd be
so proud, Kriston, Number 29!
